"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace," (Isaiah 9:6).

Dear Friends of Cluny,

Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, Emmanuel, “God-with-us”. God’s Word becomes flesh, becomes human. It is a sign of a reality that is ever new, when we celebrate God’s closeness in our lives and we feel God’s true presence among us. As Pope Benedict XVI reminds us in Verbum Domini:

“The Word was ‘abbreviated’…the eternal word became small – small enough to fit into a manger. He became a child, so that the word could be grasped by us. Now the Word is not simply audible; not only does it have a voice, now the word has a face, one which we can see: that of Jesus of Nazareth” (n. 12).

During the season of advent, we prepare to receive once again this new life which God gave us that first Christmas. We prepare ourselves to open our eyes and hearts to the mystery of a God who comes to be with us. Christmas is old yet always new. It is a celebration that recalls a birth that took place long ago but delights in the continued presence of Christ. He is here among us now and his presence with us will continue into whatever beginnings we face tomorrow and, in the weeks, and months to come.

Every Christmas, God invites us to see the world through the eyes of Emmanuel, “God-with-us”. Through the gift of this Christmas …

  • may we go forward conscious of the mystery of our God, incarnate and vulnerable, welcomed and embraced by the arms and hearts of Joseph and Mary.
  • may we embrace all that enables new life to be born in us so that we can be beacons of hope
  • may Emmanuel, “God-with-us” live in us and fill us with hope.

On behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny,

I wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas.

Sister Clare Stanley
Superior General
