St. Pierre & Miquelon

On July 20, 1826, ten years after the islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon were handed over to France by England, the first two Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny arrived on this archipelago just off the coast of Canada. They had been missioned to minister in the hospital. The following year sisters arrived and began teaching a first grade class.

Saint Pierre
  • 1 community
  • 4 sisters
  • Founded in 1826
Miquelon
  • 1 community
  • 2 sisters
  • Founded in 1826

Until approximately the year 2000, hospital care and teaching were the two main ministries. In all of these years of prosperous ministries, we had ‘outstanding personalities’ among our sisters, who gave of themselves unstintingly to the small population and marked the history of our Islands at one moment or another. This was a period rich in vocations (nothing less than 17 young women for our Congregation). Sisters from St. Pierre and Miquelon have served the congregation in:

  • Senegal,
  • Guinea,
  • Guadeloupe,
  • France,
  • Guiana,
  • the Pacific,
  • Haiti,
  • Martinique
  • Madagascar

Between 1970 and 1992, the Hospital Community of 5 sisters, became fewer and fewer, and because of their advanced age, sisters returned to France. There were no substitutes for nurses or nursing assistants. The last nursing sister joined the community of teachers in 1993. In 2003 the ministry of teaching also came to a close with the retirement of the last teaching sister.

In both Saint-Pierre and Miquelon the sisters’ ministry now includes:

  • pastoral services
  • catechesis
  • home visits to the sick or elderly

But in 2008, it was with great joy and emotion that we experienced the ‘rebirth’ of the first mission of the sisters in St. Pierre, with the arrival of a sister who ministers part- time as a care provider at Eglantine Retirement Home. It is also with great joy that we have welcomed two of our sister from Madagascar. They are very much appreciated by the local people and are for us a ‘ray of sunshine.’

In 2016 we will celebrate the bicentenary of the surrender of the Islands to France and 190 years of presence of the Congregation. We will send news and photos of the events taking place throughout the year.
