The Closure of the Jubilee of 200 Year of Presence in Senegal

What a wonderful celebration ! We thank God for the 200 years of presence of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny in Senegal.

200 years ago, on March 19, 1819, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny arrived in Senegal and more precisely on the Island of Saint Louis. At that time the sisters were called to care for the sick and instruct the young girls and they gave themselves fully to this mission. It was primarily a mission of bringing dignity to each person through education and work. Today, there are eleven communities throughout the country in Dakar, Thiès, Saint-Louis and Kaolack through which the sisters continue the mission !

On March 10 - 11, 2018, we opened the Jubilee Year at St. Louis, a moment to give thanks to God and give tribute to our valiant predecessors through a series of events. For the closure of the Jubilee, we had a large national event which took place in Dakar on May 11 - 12, 2019. On this occasion, we welcomed Sister Clare Stanley, Superior General.

On Saturday, May 11 we had a PANEL focused on the MISSION. The themes were :

  • GENERAL THEME : "Two hundred years of mission on Senegalese soil : overview of the mission of the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny."
    • First topic : Anne Marie Javouhey : origin, path and spirituality
    • Second topic : Anne Marie Javouhey visionnary : refusal to accept ’subordinate’ groups in society
    • Third topic : social dimension of the two hundred years of presence in Senegal (health, education ...)
    • Fourth topic : History of a bicentennial presence.

After the panel, there were visits to the most important sites in our Cluny history and a show at the Marius Ndiaye Stadium.

Sunday, 12 May : We celebrated a Solemn Mass at Saint Pierre de Baobabs followed by a meal at the College of the Sacred Heart. This was followed by a cultural afternoon and a draw to win a plane ticket for a trip to France to follow in the footsteps of Blessed Anne-Marie Javouhey.

What a wonderful celebration !

We thank God for the 200 years of presence of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny in Senegal.
