Conference on Climate Change

On the occasion of the 23rd United Nations Climate Change Conference, taking place 6-17 November in Bonn, Germany and being presided over by the Government of Fiji, Pope Francis has sent a message to the participants.

The Pope recalls the objectives of this conference sponsored by the United Nations, which is “to carry out another important phase of the Paris Agreement: (adopted on December 12, 2015) the process of defining and constructing guidelines, rules and institutional mechanisms so that it may be truly effective and capable of contributing to the achievement of the complex objectives it proposes.”

He reminds us of the need "to maintain a high level of collaboration". Frances renews for this purpose "the urgent invitation to a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone," to the extent that the major environmental challenge facing humanity "concerns and affect us all". (Encyclical Laudato Si ’n.14)

He warns us against the “four perverse attitudes,” that he already denounced in " Laudato Si (no. 14)":

  • denial,
  • indifference,
  • resignation and
  • trust in inadequate solutions.
