"Easter is the celebration of our God, who overcoming the darkness, offers love, hope, freedom and redemption, lighting up our path.

My Easter wish is that the love and fidelity of each one of us, be rewarded with a profound experience of the ‘light’ of the Risen Christ." (Sister Clare Stanley)

Easter greetings from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny

Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, we, along with so many in the world, have lived through an extraordinary year of grief and loss. We have gone without many things we took for granted and suffered many inconveniences. After such a year, we are obliged to reflect on what God is revealing to us through the present situation.

Now, for a second time, we find ourselves preparing to celebrate Easter under Covid restrictions. The restrictions continue to remind us of the fragility of our lives. The fear of infection and death still hangs over us. In this atmosphere, we have reflected on the deeper things which Lent calls us to examine; those things that block or even break our relationship with others and with God, as well as what it means to return to and respond to God here and now.

To prepare for Easter, we find a model in Mary of Magdala, a faithful and constant companion of Jesus. Her time with Jesus before the resurrection was a time of repentance and spiritual renewal. She dared to shed worn out habits and to enter a new way of life that drew her closer to God. Mary knew what darkness was and, faithful to the end, she was the first to go to the tomb.

The Easter gospel tells us that when Mary went to the tomb, she saw the stone had been removed but she did not yet have an understanding of the Resurrection. She mistook Jesus for the gardener. It is in the days and weeks ahead, that Mary and the disciples came to believe in Jesus’ Resurrection through his appearances to them. Her faith is deepened not because of the empty tomb but her fidelity in a continuing relationship with the risen Jesus, who turned her darkness into light.

The arrival of vaccines gives us a glimmer of light, a light which we need at this moment in time. It reminds us of the light which God offers us, our God who is fully invested in our human life, in all its joy as well as in its cruelty and tragedy.

Easter is the celebration of our God, who overcoming the darkness, offers love, hope, freedom and redemption, lighting up our path.

My Easter wish is that the love and fidelity of each one of us,
be rewarded with a profound experience of the ‘light’ of the Risen Christ.
