Historical Background
Kalimpong subdivision was in the South Tibet mission which was entrusted to the care of M.E.P. Fathers. (French Foreign Mission Society of Paris) Since the arrival of Fr. Jules Douenel M.E.P. in the South Tibet Mission in October 1892 he had been very willing to establish a Catholic Mission at Kalimpong. In March 1920 Fr. Douenel went and met Mother Ursula, Superior of Chandannagar Cluny Sisters to discuss with her the possibility to establish a Holiday Home at Kalimpong for the hot summer months that could later become a house of education.
On 23rd July 1920, the Subdivisional Officer, Kalimpong granted the sisters 1,85 acres of land on which stands St. Joseph’s Convent today.
On 17th October 1922, Mother Ursula from Chandannagar and Mother Marie Ste. Madelberthe du Sacre Coeur, the Provincial from Pondicherry, visited Kalimpong and sent a very favourable account of the possibilities for the new mission confided to the Sisters.
On 26th May 1926, the Sisters came and stayed. Mother Clare, Sr. Marie Therese, Sr. Theresa, Sr. Edmond along with Mother Ursula and Sr. Anne, two lay teachers and three young children, entrusted to the sisters at Calcutta, were welcomed at Gielle Khola Railway Terminal.
