Mission at the heart of the Christian faith

All the baptized are invited to announce "the most beautiful and greatest gift" that the Lord has given us: "His life and His love".

The Christian mission is the work of all God’s people, of all the baptized. As Pope Francis expressed, it is the work of "missionary-disciples". At the same time, we are disciples and missionaries.

The "missionary-disciples" are those who take initiative: having listened to the Word of God, having understood the Will of God, they create new roads and do not just wait for those in a "pastoral position" to come to them.

The "missionary-disciple" means that all the baptized, and specifically each baptized, is an active subject of evangelization: even the poorest, the suffering, the little ones, those who can not speak, those who do not seem to have the qualities, without forgetting the children, the sick, the elderly, the unemployed, the prisoners ... Each baptized person is subject to the announcement of the Gospel.

The pope wants a missionary transformation of the Church, which he refers to as "a Church which goes forth", less preoccupied with itself, moving outside of its comfort zone, to go "to the peripheries":

I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the centre and which then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures. Evangeli Gaudium No. 49

As a ’missionary congregation’ the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny today brings together 2600 sisters, spread across 57 countries, 30 provinces, 418 communities, on 5 continents, ministering in the areas of education, health care, pastoral ministry, evangelization and social action.
