Ireland and Great Britian

The Province of Ireland and Great Britain is one of 30 administrative areas of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny and is made up of six communities located in Dublin (4), Ferbane, and Girvan in Scotland.

Ireland
  • 5 communities
  • 70 sisters
  • Founded in 1860
Scotland
  • 1 community
  • 4 sisters
  • Founded in 1879

These communities are home to 74 sisters, many of whom have retired from active missionary work and are now living a more contemplative life where they intercede for all the great intentions of the world as they try to fulfill the vision of their Foundress, Anne-Marie Javouhey. She desired for herself and for her sisters a total commitment to God’s Will, lived out through a mission of action and contemplation. Through their vowed life of prayer they want to live out the Gospel imperative of loving God and one’s neighbour.

Many of our sisters have worked in overseas countries where they supported developing churches, established or worked in schools, hospitals, clinics and in general placed themselves at the service of their people. Now for the most part retired from active duty, they continue to pursue their ideal of doing God’s Will through a deep prayer life and loving community living.

The missionary hearts of the sisters in the Province continue to seek and do God’s Will through a variety of ministries:

  • Prayer … holding the needs of the world and the congregation before God
  • Health care … nursing home, reflexology / therapy
  • Education … 2 secondary and 1 primary school, Board of Management, Adult education, teaching English to those who have newly arrived in this country
  • Parish ministry … Minister of the Eucharist, Minister of the Word, parish council, catechetics etc.
  • St. Vincent de Paul
  • Prayer groups
  • Legion of Mary
  • Cluny Associates
  • Prison chaplaincy
  • Vocation ministry
  • helping people with special needs

Ready to help wherever they are needed, the sisters turn their hand to whatever is asked for by society or church. In this way they live out their missionary vocation, for, although it is difficult for many to be actively involved, they are still genuinely committed to the vision. Truly the words of the psalm apply to them :

Planted in the house of Yahweh, they will flourish in the courts of our God. In old age they will still bear fruit, will remain fresh and green, to proclaim Yahweh’s integrity; my rock, in whom no fault can be found. (Psalm 92)
