Seychelles / Tanzania

The vice-province of Seychelles / Tanzania, though small in number, is still very active.

Seychelles

4 communities
20 sisters
Founded in 1861

Tanzania

2 communities
8 sisters
Founded in 1998 ... (They started in Mwanzugi in May 1998 although the pioneers left Seychelles in December 1997. They did the language course in Kipalapala, Tabora first)

We live our mission, following in the footsteps of Anne-Marie Javouhey, through the ministries of:

Education
  • Tanzania: In Mwanzugi, we have a pre-primary school run by one of our sisters with one other sister working in the school. (St. Joseph Pre and Primary School)
Health Care:
  • In Seychelles, 3 sisters work in the government hospital, one in the administration and 2 as nurse/midwives.
  • In Tanzania, a dispensary is run by one of our sisters with one other sister helping working in the dispensary.
Pastoral work:
  • In Seychelles,
    • we have 2 sisters ministering as catechists in a school and at a parish.
    • Two sisters bring communion to the sick at the hospital and visit the sick in their homes.
    • Four Sisters work with the migrants from India.
  • In Tanzania,
    • the Sisters visit families
    • pray with the Basic Christian Communities
    • help in the Church.
Formation of the laity
  • In Seychelles:
    • training lay-people in communication
    • active listening
    • counselling and
    • leadership skills
Option for the poor
  • A sister accompanies all those (individuals and couples) who have moral, spiritual or psychological problems.
  • Once a week, on Friday evening, a sister accompanies alcoholics and their families (parents or spouses) to change their lives and regain their place in society.
  • We also work with drug addicts individually and in a rehabilitation center.
  • We are also involved in Prison Ministry
New mission:

Sesel Paster Lannwit (Night Pastors) is an inter-denominational church response to the social problems on the streets of Victoria at night. Five teams of trained Christian volunteers from the Catholic and Anglican churches go out on the streets in uniform on Friday and Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 2.00 a.m.

The purpose is:

  • to be the “Gospel” on the streets,
  • to bring peace to the streets,
  • to care for,
  • listen to,
  • help and pray for those in need
  • and to refer individuals for professional help.

Since 2015, sisters have become involved in this activity. There are two categories: Night Pastors and Prayer Pastors. At the moment one Sister is a Prayer Pastor. She stays at “base” to pray with other lay people while one has chosen to go out with a group of 4 or 5 others to meet the people who roam the streets at night ... the alcoholics, the homeless, the drug addicts, the prostitutes.

We hope that eventually this project will decrease the number of drug addicts, prostitutes, alcoholics, especially the under-age drinkers, and the homeless, and that with time their lives will change and they can find their place in society.

Formation of young women interested in Religious Life
  • In Makokola- Tanzania: the whole community of 4 Sisters is involved in the “Come & See” and Aspirancy programmes.
  • In the community in Mwanzugi, all 4 Sisters take class with the Postulants.
  • Since January 2019 – we have re-opened the St. Joseph Novitiate in Seychelles. It was previously in St. Joseph Convent (canonical erected in July 1887 – until around 1959). Thus 60 years after its “unofficial closure”- it is up and running in Regina Mundi Convent, Mont Fleuri. The young women in Formation are from Tanzania.
Our ministry can be classified as follows:
  • Education
