Route of the Abolition of Slavery

Launched in 2004, the "Route of the abolition of slavery," is part of the international project "The Slave Route" supported by United Nations and UNESCO out of the necessity to remember and the desire to bring to life the Law of 10 May 2001 adopted by France "in recognition of the slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity." Anne-Marie Javouhey, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny, was included in this project.

All people, children of the same God, are fundamentally equal. Declaring someone free does not in itself accomplish freedom. One must learn about freedom, especially after living in conditions that destroy ones being and human rights at the most fundamental level.

Anne-Marie Javouhey, liberator of slaves, recalls in all circumstances, the dignity of every human being.

To loosen the chains of injustice, and "restore freedom to the oppressed" (Prophet Isaiah)

Her actions would give proof to the government that the men and women who were enslaved, were able to harmoniously reintegrate into society.

Anne-Marie Javouhey, along with the men on this route of the abolition of slavery (the anonymous group of Champagney, the abbot Henri Grégoire, the rebel Toussaint Louverture, journalist and senator Victor Schœlcher) have passed on the flame of justice and liberty. They have shown us the way!

Their path continues today through the "Route of the Abolition of Slavery and of Human Rights" which honors their memories and invites us to continue to convey their message.
